Teeth with silver (amalgam) fillings can become darker as the silver in the amalgam fillings tends to be absorbed by the teeth. A darker tooth can also be a sign of cavities occurring underneath the amalgam. In either case it is recommended that the amalgam filling be replaced with the appropriate aesthetic

Silver fillings may allow bacterial leakage over time and can expand and contract at different rates than the tooth structure, which increases the chances of tooth fracture. It is unknown whether the mercury contained in amalgam is a health risk but it has certainly raised many questions in past years. Teeth with silver fillings are also prone to cavities since amalgam does not form a complete seal with the tooth and there is always room for bacteria to squeeze by.
